Associate Professor Christian Vægter and his research colleagues will use the grant to study diabetic neuropathy, which is a serious complication that is seen in 30-50 per cent of all diabetic patients. Diabetic neuropathy leads to sensory deterioration that can be accompanied by pain, and the disorder can later lead to muscle weakness and reduced organ function.

Although there are 415 million diabetes sufferers worldwide, researchers know very little about the underlying biological mechanisms. Christian Vægter hopes that the grant can help researchers to gain new knowledge about how the support cells, glia, communicate with the nerve fibres, axons, in patients who have developed diabetic neuropathy, so that in the long term it will be possible to develop targeted treatment therapies for diabetes patients.
