Claus Ziegler Simonsen is new professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine. With his new professorship, he wants to ensure that even more people have blood clots removed and thus have better chances of maintaining their future mobility.

Rapid and effective treatment of a blood clot in the brain is essential for the patient’s subsequent physical capability. Claus Ziegler Simonsen, who is also a consultant at Aarhus University Hospital, conducts research into how to provide the patient with the best possible treatment during the acute phase.

In a current research project, he examines e.g. whether patients benefit from being admitted directly to a hospital where the medical doctors can carry out a so-called thrombectomy, which is the suctioning of the blood clot by introducing a catheter in the groin and up to the brain. The treatment is effective already a few hours after a patient is diagnosed with a blood clot in the brain.

Patients experience faster recovery and fewer disabilities when they have the blood clot removed. Time is a crucial factor here, as the earlier the thrombectomy is performed, the greater the effect.
