An MRI scan records detailed images of the body. It is used for diagnosing diseases such as cancer and various disorders of the back, heart, joints and brain. In the case of brain diseases, detailed images of the brain are vital for fast diagnosis and treatment. This is the focal point of Sune Nørhøj Jespersen’s research, in which he develops mathematical models for how the brain's microstructure is recorded in MRI images. He has been appointed doctor of medicine at the Department of Clinical Medicine at Aarhus University.
"The doctoral degree is a great recognition of my research within the area over many years. My research can be of great benefit to patients in the long term. New mathematical models of how the components of brain tissue are depicted on MRI images give doctors an opportunity to discover brain diseases earlier. This can be important for Alzheimer's patients, as the increased sensitivity to microstructural changes can also support the development of new methods of treatment," explains Sune Nørhøj Jespersen.
Sune Nørhøj Jespersen is affiliated with the Center of Functionally Integrative Neuroscience (CFIN)/MINDLab at the Department of Clinical Medicine. CFIN/MINDLab is a collaboration between neuroscience researchers from different departments and faculties at Aarhus University and the Royal Academy of Music. Joint research is carried out aimed at understanding the human brain. In addition to his affiliation with CFIN/MINDLab, Sune Nørhøj Jespersen is also affiliated with the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
Sune Nørhøj Jespersen has a Master’s degree in physics and mathematics and a PhD degree in theoretical physics from 2001. He has been affiliated with CFIN/MINDLab for the last decade.
Sune Nørhøj Jespersen’s higher doctoral dissertation was titled "Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Brain Tissue Microstructure".
