Sven Erik Nørholt has taken up a position as clinical professor at Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital. He specialises in jaw surgery and diseases of the jaw bones.

Sven Erik Nørholt, newly appointed clinical professor at Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital.

Sven Erik Nørholt has been appointed Clinical Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery - a field within the world of dentistry engaged with the study of the teeth, mouth and jaws. More specifically, he conducts research into jaw deformities and different types of bone diseases of the jaw.

When a jaw develops incorrectly this may, among other issues, impair the patient’s chewing function. By using a special technique known as bone distraction, Sven Erik Nørholt and his research team can correct jaw deformities. Furthermore, for some types of patients the technique is more gentle and produces a more stable result after the surgical intervention.

Sven Erik Nørholt’s research into jaw deformities aims at developing new treatment methods for patients and at documenting that the methods are effective.

“My research focuses specifically on patients with severe jaw deformities due to side-effects to cleft lip and palate or juvenile arthritis and syndromes of the face and jaws, among others. Through bone distraction - the specialised medical term for which is ‘distraction osteogenesis’ - the patient’s chewing function can be brought closer to normal,” says the newly appointed professor.

Svend Erik Nørholt’s second field of research is bone diseases of the jaw. Research into these diseases specifically aims at helping patients who have side-effects following cancer treatment or suffer from inflammation of the jaw bones.

Svend Erik Nørholt was born on 23 April 1965 in Aarhus. He lives in the Aarhus suburb of Holme with his wife and has three children.
