Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital have appointed Consultant, DMSc Jens Erik Nielsen-Kudsk to a professorship. His research aims to improve the treatment of patients with atrial fibrillation, patients with artificial heart valves and patients suffering from pulmonary embolisms (blood clots in the lungs).

Jens Erik Nielsen-Kudsk has recent begun work as professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine, Aarhus University and the Department of Cardiology at Aarhus University Hospital.
The professorship includes both experimental and clinical studies. Jens Erik Nielsen-Kudsk’s work will contribute to improving the treatment of patients with atrial fibrillation, patients with artificial heart valves, patients with acute pulmonary embolisms and patients with elevated blood pressure in the lungs.
Together with his colleagues, Jens Erik Nielsen-Kudsk is engaged in finding out whether patients with atrial fibrillation can do without anticoagulant treatment if they instead undergo treatment to shut off the left atrial appendage of the heart with catheter techniques from the groin.
Jens Erik Nielsen-Kudsk has furthermore developed a new and gentler catheter technique where it is possible to treat patients with worn down artificial heart valves by inserting a new heart valve into the old one and in this way avoiding the need for new open heart surgery.
