On Wednesday 9 June at 10:00, Anne Staub Rasmussen defends her PhD dissertation entitled "Surgery during pregnancy - risk and prognosis".

In Denmark, more than 60.000 newborns are delivered yearly and in approximately 2% of all pregnancies, there is a need for non-obstetric abdominal surgery. Information on the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes following these procedures is lacking. This is examined in a new PhD-project from Aarhus University, Health. The project is registry-based and comprises 4 studies examining the prevalence of surgery during pregnancy in Denmark in 1996-2015, the risk of being born preterm or small for gestational age following abdominal surgery, including appendectomies, during pregnancy and the risk of adverse birth outcomes in pregnancies occuring up to 2 years after a surgical procedure.

Based on the project it was concluded, that non-obstetric surgery during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of miscarriage, preterm birth and being born smal for gestational age. The risk of adverse birth outcomes following certain surgical procedures conducted before pregnancy was minimal and surgery for complicated appendicitis was followed by higher risk of preterm delivery compared with surgery for uncomplicated appendicitis.

The summary is written by the PhD student.

The defence is public and takes place online.  Please read the attached press release for more information.
