On Wednesday 13 October at 14:00, Rikke Nørgaard Pedersen defends her PhD dissertation entitled "Late Breast Cancer Recurrence - Risk, Prognosis and Prevention".

In 2018, there were over 70,000 female breast cancer survivors in Denmark. Due to screening and increasingly effective therapy, about 75% of breast cancer patients in Denmark survive at least ten years, depending on stage at diagnosis. To our knowledge, no large studies have investigated the incidence of late breast cancer recurrence ≥10 years after primary diagnosis. Furthermore, information on prognosis after late recurrence is sparse. Using Danish nationwide registries, researchers from Aarhus University constructed and validated an algorithm to identify late breast cancer recurrence cases, estimated the incidence of late breast cancer recurrence and identified factors associated with the risk of late recurrence. They investigated survival after late breast cancer recurrence and potential prognostic factors including time of recurrence (early versus late recurrence). Finally, the researchers investigated potential preventive strategies against late recurrence, focusing on the association between post-diagnostic statin use and the long-term risk of breast cancer recurrence.

The summary is written by the PhD student.

The defence is public and takes place in the auditorium, Aarhus University, Olof Palmes Alle 43-45, 8200 Aarhus N. Please read the attached press release for more information.
