On Thursday 2 September at 14:00, Susan Mikkelsen defends her PhD dissertation entitled "Predictors of rhino-conjunctivitis and asthma with a side trip to SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence".
Asthma and hay fever are common chronic diseases and in severe cases, they cause reduced quality of life. Improved understanding of the diseases is needed and a large, well-characterized study population is crucial. The PhD project describes self-reported asthma and hay fever in a large cohort of Danish blood donors with respect to prevalence, potential risk factors, the age effect on onset of symptoms, IgE sensitization (antibodies to inhalant allergens), and changes in blood cell counts. Furthermore, new symptomatic participants are identified in a follow-up questionnaire study.
Healthcare workers have been key players in the coronavirus pandemic. This PhD project also includes a coronavirus antibody study among health care and administrative staff in Central Denmark Region. Prevention of infection in this group is important and this study raises awareness of the precautions that should be taken to avoid in-hospital transmission.
The summary is written by the PhD student.
The defence is public and takes place in Auditorium OPA38, 138-101, Olof Palmes Allé 38, 8200 Aarhus N. Please read the attached press release for more information.
