On Wednesday 2 June at 14.00, Susanne Boel Graversen defends her PhD dissertation entitled "Short-term readmission and mortality in older patients discharged after a pneumonia admission".

Pneumonia in older persons has become a major challenge in healthcare systems worldwide, primarily due to demographic ageing. Moreover, the number of pneumonia admissions is increasing. With shorter length of hospital stays and an increasing number of older patients with high levels of medical complexity, the post-discharge period after a pneumonia admission may constitute a period of increased risk of an adverse health event. The association between various risk factors and short-term readmission and mortality has been explored in a new PhD project from Health, Aarhus University. Using data from Danish nationwide registries, the project examines how demographic characteristics, health-seeking behavior, comorbidities, and medication use affect the risk of readmission and mortality in older persons during the first 30 days after a pneumonia admission.

The results from this PhD project should enable clinicians to regocnize "red flags", indicating a higher risk of an adverse health event in the post-discharge period. This knowledge should inform the conversations on care planning at the time of discharge.

The summary is written by the PhD student.

The defence is public and takes place in Samfundsmedicinsk Auditorium, Aarhus University and online.  Please read the attached press release for more information.
