Sean Hansen continues as PhD student in Poul Nissen's group, where his research focus will be to elucidate the ultrastructure of neurons, with a particular focus on the architecture of the axon initial segment (AIS) and the membrane protein composition found within this domain. To this end, he will implement cryo-electron tomography to gain high-resolution structural insight of the in situ and native protein organisation at the AIS, combined with other state-of-the-art methods including correlative light-electron microscopy, focused ion-beam milling, and sub-tomogram averaging.
