Gene editing, atmospheric aerosol and next-generation internet are among the research interests the new networks will be exploring in coming years. Grants were awarded of up to DKK 150,000 in 2017 and up to 230,000 in 2018 to each network. Committee for Research and External Cooperation evaluated the applications and awarded the grants. Eighteen applications were received.

The projects which have received funding were selected on the basis of their originality, interdisciplinary breadth and potential for growth. In contrast to previous years, this year the committee chose to prioritise early career researchers, and only applicants with a maximum of ten years of experience after completion of the PhD were eligible.
