He has put rectal cancer surgery on the agenda and made his mark as one of the most prominent surgeons in Europe. Søren Laurberg is now being honoured for his career as a researcher with an honorary membership of the US association American Society of Colon Rectal Surgeons.
"He has had a huge influence on rectal cancer surgery. Søren Laurberg is a skilled clinician and has an impressive list of publications. For us it was obvious step, because he is one of the most respected rectal cancer surgeons in Europe," explains Patricia L. Roberts, president of the American Society of colon rectal surgeons, about the election of Søren Laurberg as an honorary member.
In 1998, Søren Laurberg became Denmark's first professor in colorectal surgery. Since then he has worked to improve the treatment of patients with colorectal diseases, including cancer. This includes conducting research into delayed complications for patients with colorectal cancer and through his research he has helped to optimise surgery on patients with colorectal and intestinal cancer, thereby improving the survival rates of this group of patients.
It is far from the first time that Søren Laurberg is honoured for his contribution to research. Nevertheless, becoming an honorary member of the American Society of Colon Rectal Surgeons is a special honour for the researcher.
"Personally, I'm very, very proud. The association is the largest and oldest in the world, and to receive such recognition from your professional colleagues means so much," says Søren Laurberg.
