Using mobile phones abroad

AU’s mobile phones and iPads are not covered by the new EU “roam like at home” rules which ensure that the price is the same whether you use your mobile phone in Denmark or in other EU countries. For this reason, please continue to think twice before using your mobile phone abroad. Read more about this here and find out what you can do.

Aarhus University is not part of a special discount scheme which covers mobile and data traffic abroad.

It is therefore important to remember to follow the steps below when taking your mobile with you abroad:

  • Deactivate call forwarding to and from your mobile phone.
  • Deactivate data roaming.
  • Use Wi-Fi to synchronise your email and calendar.
  • Limit the use of GPS and Google Maps.
  • Limit your mobile phone’s connection to the internet. Use Wi-Fi instead.

Data usage abroad

If you use your mobile phone abroad, a data usage limit of DKK 360 per month is set automatically. You can change the data usage limit, if necessary. You will receive a text message when you are close to the limit.

Using wireless network

Many smartphones can connect to Wi-Fi (wireless network). In order to reduce data charges, it is a good idea, for example, to use the hotel’s WI-FI when you are abroad.

You can follow these guides to monitor your mobile data usage:

iPhone

  • Go into ‘Settings’'
  • Select ‘Cellular’ or ‘Mobile Data
  • Scroll down to see ‘Cellular data usage’

Android

  • Go into ‘Settings’
  • Select ‘Data usage’

If you use Facebook abroad

When you browse through Facebook, the videos use data even though you have not actively opened them to watch them. The videos are playing in the background. Follow the guide below to avoid unnecessary data usage:

  • Open Facebook
  • Click the three horizontal lines in the bottom right-hand corner'
  • Select ‘Settings’
  • Select ‘Account Settings’
  • Select ‘Videos and photos’
  • Select ‘Autoplay’
  • Select ‘Never Autoplay Videos’
