Chemical substances form part of our everyday lives and consumption patterns. Even so, we know very little about how exposure to these substances affects our health. Herman Autrup from Aarhus University is a toxicologist and his research aims to establish when chemical substances are hazardous to our health. The research of Autrup and his colleagues aims to gain more knowledge about this field and  their work contributes to a healthier environment and also informs policy making.

“Among other things we try to establish which population groups are most exposed to hazardous pollutants from the air, foods and consumer goods, and which groups are most sensitive to exposure,” he explains.

And now he has received an award for his long-standing work in the field of toxicology. Herman Autrup received the award at an international toxicology conference hosted by EUROTOX, the European federation of toxicologists. The federation represents more than 5,000 toxicologists from the European countries.

Herman Autrup is currently president of the International Union of Toxicology – IUTOX.
