Type 2 diabetics gain control of blood sugar levels within six months

2015.10.03 | Tina Christensen

With blood sugar regulating medication, 72% of type 2 diabetics gain control over their blood sugar within six months. That is evident from a population based registry study conducted by post.doc. Elisabeth Svensson from Department of Clinical Epidemiology and colleagues.

The study included 38,000 patients who began their first treatment for type 2 diabetes. It showed that patients with high levels of HbA1c had most difficulties gaining control over their blood sugar, which stresses the importance of identifying type-2 diabetics early. The study also showed that patients less than 60 years old and those who lived alone or had severe comorbidity were least successful in getting control over blood sugar levels.

Elisabeth recently presented the results at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), which was held in Stockholm. The results have also been mentioned in an article in Dagens Medicin.
