The disease atherosclerosis (also called hardening of the arteries) is widespread in a modern society like Denmark and it is also the cause of a quarter of all deaths worldwide. New professor Jacob Fog Bentzon from Aarhus University believes that even a little progress in the prevention and treatment of the disease can have a major impact.

The majority of Danes develop some degree of atherosclerosis, but some groups such as e.g. diabetes patients are particularly vulnerable – without researchers being able to explain why. According to Professor Jacob Fog Bentzon, there is therefore particular potential to improve treatment options and in the longer term also the prognosis for patients.
Jacob Fog Bentzon and his colleagues are searching for new treatment options while at the same time further developing the use of diagnostic imaging in connection with different types of scans. The latter could help to target the use of the treatment that is already available today.
The professorship, which the Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus has helped to establish, aims to strengthen collaboration between the research environments at the university, hospital and centre.
