The medical speciality of respiratory diseases ranges from broad public diseases such as emphysema, asthma and lung cancer to the rarer but equally severe pulmonary diseases like sarcoidosis and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Elisabeth Bendstrup has studied the rare lung diseases in particular, and her research results have helped raise awareness about the less common diseases. Amon other things, Elisabeth Bendstrup’s research into IPF and the new examination method 'cryobiopsy’ has created better opportunities for diagnosing rare diseases, which has led to both earlier diagnosis and treatment. The prognosis for IPF patients is dismal, but has improved over the past ten years.

As clinical professor and chair, Elisabeth Bendstrup is spearheading research in pulmonary medicine in Aarhus. The new professorship increases the focus on lung diseases and bolsters research activities in Denmark and internationally while benefitting patients, who will experience better methods of examination and treatment options.

Elisabeth Bendstrup took up the position on 1 January 2021.
