Just under 2,000 pregnant woman develop gestational diabetes in Denmark each year. They have seven to eight times higher risk than other women of getting type 2 diabetes later in life. Research also shows that their children live with a large overrisk of overweight and type 2 diabetes.
In the research project FACE-IT, which will begin in 2018 and be carried out in the form of a randomised controlled trial with a total of 500 families, Helle Terkildsen Maindal and her fellow researchers will develop a health promotion initiative in collaboration with the mothers from the families concerned.
Helle Terkildsen Maindal expects the project to be able to contribute to making the Danish healthcare system better at reducing the social inequalities in health through prevention and health promotion.
