650,000 Danes suffer from osteoporosis, but only 172,000 are aware of their condition, and of these, only 90,000 are receiving treatment. This is the treatment which Danish researchers will examine more closely to find ways in which it can be improved in a research project headed by Bente Langdahl.

In the five-year project funded by DKK 25 million from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, the researchers will conduct three clinical trials and establish a register of the prevalence and treatment of osteoporosis in Denmark.

The goal is for osteoporosis patients to receive far more individualised treatment which not only has a short term effect, but also helps prevent the number of fractures suffered in the following decade or longer. According to Bente Langdahl, who is also a consultant at Aarhus University Hospital, the research results will also have a major impact on the treatment of osteoporosis internationally.

The coverage is based on press material from the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
