Many Danes suffer from heart rhythm irregularities, significantly reducing their quality of life. Jens Cosedis Nielsen from Aarhus University has just been given a financial helping hand to the tune of DKK five million from the Novo Nordisk Foundation to continue his research into arrhythmias.

"We need to examine whether better treatment of frequently occurring cardiac arrhythmias and their consequences improves the prognosis for patients who live with electronic devices implanted in their heart. At the same time, we are also looking at whether individually tailored treatment with three-chamber devices improves the prognosis for heart failure patients, as well as new methods of catheter treatment of arrhythmias," explains Jens Cosedis Nielsen.

He emphasises that the overall aim of the research is to improve the treatment of patients, in particular patients who live with implanted electronic devices in the heart such as pacemakers, Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs) and three-chamber devices for treatment of heart failure.

"The research findings will potentially contribute to future guidelines for pacemaker treatment as well as guidelines for how we treat patients with chronic heart failure," he says.

The grant means it is possible for Jens Cosedis Nielsen to continue the research work he has carried out since his appointment as clinical professor in 2011.
