Fashion and technology synergise when the Aarhus Walks on Water fashion show literally takes to the water in the European Capital of Culture. The event is held under the auspices of 2017Academy, an educational platform developed by a strategic partnership between Fonden2017, AU Arts and VIA.
Festival of the Century – Europe 1950-2000 (3-12 March 2017)
During the Capital of Culture year, the Festival of the Century hones in on Europe between 1950 and 2000. In the course of these 50 years, we sent men to the moon, women into battle and hippies on island camps. The student revolt took root, while immigrant workers moved in, and Europe’s Iron Curtain divided both the population and prosperity. On the cusp of the new millennium, technological developments really started to take off. PCs and mobile phones became commonplace, and the worldwide web made the world shrink.
The robots are coming (27-28 May 2017)
The City of Aarhus and Aarhus University are welcoming more than 1,000 young people from all over the world who will come together to find out who is best at constructing and programming LEGO robots. The FIRST® LEGO® LEAGUE Open European Championship 2017 will take place at Navitas on the Aarhus waterfront. The young participants, who are aged 10-16, come from about 45 countries and six different continents. They have all won national tournaments, and are representing their countries in these international robot olympics.
Fashion show on the water (16 september 2017)
Experience a spectacular performance and fashion show when fashion and new technologies join forces and walk on the water from Aarhus and out into the world. The Aarhus Canal, Dokk1 and the port of Aarhus set the scene for Aarhus Walks on Water with digital façade projections, interactive e-textiles and sonic spaces. Students and researchers from Aarhus University are involved in the project.
Rethink the Reformation at Bispetorv (31 October 2017)
On the day before the 500th anniversary of Luther’s theses, the spirit of the Reformation will rise again at Bispetorv in Aarhus. Aarhus University, Aarhus Cathedral and the Danish University Extension are transforming the square and the surrounding buildings into a ‘rethink laboratory’ – Rethink Reformation – where you can contribute to rethinking the Reformation’s theories as visions for the world today. Following the event on Bispetorv, Aarhus University will host an international research conference on how the Reformation has influenced Danish and European history and contemporary society.

Symposium on taste (4-5 November 2017)
The ‘Creative Tastebuds’ symposium asks new questions about taste in the crossfield between the natural sciences and the humanities. What connects culture and the brain in relation to taste? The symposium will present views from leading experts from the humanities and the natural sciences, while performers from the creative industry will engage with researchers and perform experiments with the public.
Conference: Rethinking the value of arts and culture (8-11 November 2017)
Aarhus University is hosting the conference RE-Value – Rethinking the value of arts and culture. The conference will be held in conjunction with Aarhus 2017 and UNeECC (University Network of the European Capitals of Culture). The conference starts with the following question: How can we understand and talk about the value of art and culture? Aarhus – as European Capital of Culture 2017 – provides an obvious opportunity to find out how culture can create changes in society.
