Cardiovascular diseases are the most frequent cause of death for patients with type 2 diabetes, as diabetics have a significantly increased risk of blood clots in the heart and brain due to hardening of the arteries.

The goal of Per Løgstrup Poulsen's research is to develop better tools for distinguishing between high-risk patients who will benefit from intensive preventive treatment, and low-risk patients who will simply experience side effects from the same treatment. Through the use of new methods to examine diabetics, Per Løgstrup Poulsen and his colleagues can assess arterial stiffness and see early signs of atherosclerosis.

Per Løgstrup Poulsen is also affiliated with the Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus, and his professorship is partially financed by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
