Aarhus University has just appointed Troels Krarup Hansen as a new professor. In the professorship he will continue his research into diabetes complications. Patients with diabetes develop complications such as kidney disease and cardiovascular disease both more frequently and at an earlier stage when compared to other patient groups. One reason for this is that the high blood glucose values of diabetes mislead the immune system, which then begins to attack the body's own tissue.
"Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital have very proud traditions within the field of research into diabetes complications. Through the professorship, it is my ambition to build on this tradition and help to increase collaboration between the different research environments at the university and the hospital," says Troels Krarup Hansen.
Even though modern treatment has led to better treatment than previously for patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes, the researchers still require a better understanding of why diabetes patients develop complications.
“Our research can help to identify new markers for the development of diabetes complications and potentially form the basis for the development of new medicine. The development of new treatment options can help patients with diabetes to live a longer life without complications," explains Troels Krarup Hansen.
Troels Krarup Hansen graduated as a medical doctor from Aarhus University. He also holds a PhD degree and a higher doctoral degree in medicine from the university.
