INTERNAL NEWS

I will continue as Head of Department at IOOS for another three years
It has been five years since I entered the premises through the main doorway as head of the Department of Dentistry and Oral Health. It was a hot and sunny day in August, and time has flown by since then. My fixed-term employment has now been extended by another three years, which means I will continue as head of department until the summer of 2024. I look forward to continuing our work together for IOOS, for the Faculty of Health and for Aarhus University, which is staffed by extremely talented and committed people who contributes to important education and research.

Christmas party on Friday, December 10th
We are having our Christmas party for all employees on Friday, December 10th. We will begin the evening by gathering everyone for a welcome drink between 16.00-17.00, followed by Christmas dinners in your various sections or you can choose to join the dinner with colleagues from all corners of the department.

Between 21.00 and 00.30 everyone is welcome to join the party in the canteen, and Lars is booked as our favorite DJ. You will receive more detailed information later on, but please save the date for now.

6 valuable tips: Avoid falling victim to cybercriminals in the home office
Although we have returned to a normal everyday life at the department, working from home will continue to be an option for some. The level of security in the home office is not the same as it is at the university, so when we work online remotely, the university becomes more vulnerable to cybercriminals, who constantly search for gaps that give access to our knowledge, data and money.

The university's information security department has collected 6 pieces of advice for employees working remotely:

1. Use the VPN on AU equipment

2. Keep your computer, phone and tablet updated

3. Focus on what type of data you share with who during online meetings

4. Avoid sharing internal, confidential and sensitive data on social media or via text messages

5. As a general rule, only use systems and software provided by AU

6. Treat work-related documents the same way at home as in the office

We work intensively to ensure a stable supply of clinic clothes
We are aware that the shelves with clinic clothes quickly become empty, or that the clothes are found in the wrong sizes when we arrive in the morning. We are working to get a stable delivery. Until it is successful, pick up only the clinic clothes that you need to wear on the same morning that you arrive.

RESEARCH, EDUCATION & TEACHING

The launch of our new professional bachelor as clinical dental technician has been postponed to 2023
In the steering group for ‘The Aarhus Model of Dental Education’, we have decided to postpone the start of our new professional bachelor as clinical dental technician from 2022 to the fall semester of 2023.

We do this to ensure sufficient time to develop and detailed plan an education of the very best quality. At the same time, we avoid a concurrent running of our present academy education and the new professional bachelor education. This will provide both space for planning and for the necessary competence development of the teachers.

Helle Hornhaver is our new sub-project manager for the development of the clinical dental technician education, as Ulla Bæk Lindtoft will handle other work tasks. You are welcome to contact Helle Hornhaver if you have any questions about the education or the process.

A changed clinic structure in the dental education will be in place for fall semester 2022
The larger admission of students to the dental education also means larger “letter groups”, which will result in future capacity problems e.g. in laboratories, simulation clinics, specialist clinics etc.

In order to make room for all students, we will plan the dental education around a 5-day week instead of a 4-day week both at the clinic and in preclinical teaching, starting in the fall semester 2022. This means that each semester will be divided into 5 “letter groups” (instead of 4) resulting in a group size of 15-17 students.

The planning of the preclinical/clinical teaching in a 5-day week is also important for the planning of the theoretical teaching. In the fall of 2021, our course responsible teachers, other lecturers and our department secretariat will work together to get the new schedule in place and ready for the planners in HE Studies by February 2021.

Changes in working days for clinical teachers/senior clinical instructors and dental nurses at the dental education will be announced via Birgitte Lüttge, Helle Tolboe and Helle Leegård.

We now have a video library of clinical procedures
Associate Professor Sebastian Schlafer (Section for Oral Ecology and Caries Control) and our secretariat employee Kim Sørensen have set up a video library with clinical procedures. It is a great idea and very helpful that we all - including our students - can view a video and be updated on 'the gold standard' at all times.

The library is set up as a Brightspace course with links to the videos, which are located on Panopto. In addition to the videos, there are also clinical guidelines that elaborate on the patient case itself.

The video library is still under development, and there is room for more videos, so this is an open invitation for you to make a video with a clinical procedure within your field. We have the entire technical set-up in place, and our student assistants are trained to operate the equipment.

Contact Sebastian Schlafer if you have questions about the video library for clinical procedures, or if you would like to make a video.

The diploma program in oral health is on hold in 2022
It has been decided that for the time being in 2022, modules on this type of further education for dental hygienists will not be offered with the exception of the graduation projects.

The reason is partly that the curriculum revisions in the ordinary educations require a lot of resources, and partly that there has been a limited search for the education in the last few years.

During 2022, the future of the diploma program will be reassessed.

IOOS researchers can get an electronic lab book free of charge
Health now provides an electronic lab book for those IOOS researchers who would like a platform where they can document, share and coordinate research with selected cooperating partners. This is a thoroughly tested web solution AU Labbooks simulating the hand-held notes book of former times at the laboratories filled with records of the development of projects, notes and outlines of the set-up of the equipment. The idea of lab books is to avoid exchanging this kind of information in numerous mails. Instead, you get a web-based point of focus for all that is suitable for sharing among peers.

The system is suited for laboratory research, record–based research and clinical research and data-manager Jakob Hjort from the Department of Clinical Medicine can help get you started. Read more in the article ‘Special offer: get an electronic labbook’ and remember that personal data and personal sensitive data still belong in specific systems like for example REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture).

Bente Nyvad takes part in a series of articles on female researchers
Diversity and equality are strategic focus areas at the university and for that reason, the faculty newsletter runs a series of articles with the headline “Woman and leading researcher”.
