On Friday 14 January at 14:00, Nanja Holland Hansen defends her PhD dissertation entitled "Compassion Cultivation Training for informal caregivers of people with a mental illness".

Informal caregivers of people with a mental illness are at an increased risk of developing depression. anxiety and stress. It is therefore important to investigate preventive interventions that may increase informal caregivers mental health. The PhD. project investigated, in a randomized controlled trial, the effectiveness of a compassion cultivation training program for informal caregivers of people with a mental illness on symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. 161 informal caregivers were included in the study and results showed that at 6-months follow-up symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress remained decreased and their overall welll-being continued to be increased. The study has great generalizability as the informal caregivers were between 18-75 years old, their loved ones suffered from a variety of mental illness and the study was conducted at two different geographical locations in Denmark. Moreover, a mediation analysis was conducted to investigate which mediators drove the effect on depression, anxiety and stress. Results showed that mindfulness and self-compassion were mediatiors of the effect.
