Michael Horsman receives the J. Eugene Robinson Award. He is also professor at the Department of Experimental Clinical Oncology at Aarhus University Hospital.

Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine, Michael Horsman, receives the J. Eugene Robinson Award for more than thirty years of research into new methods to make cancer treatment more effective. The J. Eugene Robinson Award is given annually to a researcher who has made a unique contribution to research into hyperthermal oncology – i.e. the use of heat temperatures at 39-43 °C to improve radiotherapy of cancer cells.

Michael Horsman conducts research into tumour cells that are particularly resistant and difficult to deal with. These cells have areas with a reduced oxygen level, which in turn reduces the effectiveness of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. His research indicates that hyperthermia can eliminate the resistant cells and thus prevent cancer sufferers from developing metastases. Some European hospitals currently use a method with a heating effect on the tumour that increases the effect of radiotherapy. Michael Horsman predicts that more European hospitals will follow this method as his knowledge in the area is being shared as part of a major EU project.
