Researchers honoured for fewer animal experiments

Three researchers from Health, Aarhus University, have received a scholarship from the Frøknerne Anna and Dagny Hjerrilds Foundation. They receive the scholarship for saying no to animal experiments or for minimising the use of laboratory animals in their research.

Mice and rats are not what fill the laboratory of the three researchers from Aarhus University who have just received a scholarship from the Frøknerne Anna and Dagny Hjerrilds Foundation.

The researchers have each received DKK 100,000 from the foundation, which honours researchers who cut down on the use of laboratory animals – or do not use animals at all – in their scientific research.

Professor of forensic medicine Lene Warner Thorup Boel from the Department of Forensic Medicine has spent many years carrying out her research on deceased persons. Her main research area is forensic imaging and the study of bone tissue. She works with different diagnostic imaging methods such as CT and MRI scans of the deceased to clarify traumatological and medical issues.

Uffe B. Skov Sørensen, who is associate professor at the Department of Biomedicine, studies, among other things, the bacteria designated as group B Streptococcus. These bacteria can cause infections in both animals and humans. He divides up the bacteria using DNA-based methods, and this has opened the door for completely new opportunities for determining the type of bacteria without using antiserum from laboratory animals.

Associate professor and PhD Agnete Larsen from the Department of Biomedicine studies the causes of diseases in humans. Here she focuses on how best to collect human data and utilise it in basic research. Agnete Larsen uses different types of tissue – such as placental tissue donated by patients – to compare biochemical and molecular biological biomarkers on tissue samples.
