How does the immune system know if the body is infected? This is one of the many unanswered questions regarding the body’s immensely complex defence mechanisms, but now Søren Riis Paludan will try to enlighten us all on the subject.

He will attempt to identify the cellular and molecular mechanisms utilized by cells and tissue to discover and react to viruses. The project may give an entirely new insight into how the immune system activates the first line of defence against infection.

The Distinguished Investigator-grant is given to established researchers at the highest international level, and aims to secure the researchers financial stability in order for them to pursue ambitious and meaningful research projects.

Apart from the Distinguished Investigator-grant, Søren Riis Paludan has recently received a large grant from the European Research Council.
