As honorary professor at Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital, the French professor Horace Roman will use his expertise to help his new colleagues in Aarhus develop and individualise the treatment of women suffering from severe endometriosis.

Ten per cent of all fertile women are affected by the painful disease endometriosis, which is a form of chronic pelvic inflammatory disease. With the affiliation of Professor Horace Roman, Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital strengthen both the research into endometriosis and its treatment. The goal is to develop individualised treatment that takes into account individual symptoms, the incidences of the disease and whether the woman in question wishes to become pregnant.

Horace Roman is professor of obstetrics and gynaecology and a leading experts in endometriosis surgery in the intestines and ovaries. He works as a surgeon at the Clinique Tivoli Ducos in Bordeaux, France, where he also conducts epidemiological research. In Aarhus he will work together with his colleagues at the Department of Clinical Medicine and the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics to turn his latest research into practice in the form of new, individualised treatment options.

Reduced pain and increased chance of natural pregnancy

The newly appointed honorary professor's most recent research results suggest that taking a more conservative approach to surgery on intestinal endometriosis could be beneficial. And also that it may be desirable to treat endometriosis cysts on the ovaries with plasma energy instead of surgically removing the cysts. The research shows that these approaches can reduce the level of pain and give the women a better chance of becoming pregnant in a natural way.
