On Monday 31 January at 14:00, Solveig Kärk Abildtrup Larsen defends her PhD dissertation entitled "Whole-body MRI with DWI for monitoring patients treated for testicular cancer".
Patients with testicular cancer are often young and otherwise healthy men. Luckily, the treatment is efficient and most patients survive just as long as their peers. To discover relapse, frequent CT scans are recommended for the first five years after diagnosis, but this includes quite a large amount of radiation. These young patients with long life expectancy are thus in risk of developing a new, radiation-induced cancer.
To limit the radiation load, AUH hopes to exchange CT with MRI in follow-up of testicular cancer. MRI is radiation-free and has been used in testicular cancer patients without metastases since 2008. Data from 750 patients show good results. Recently, 90 patients with metastatic testicular cancer have been both CT and MRI scanned before and after commencing treatment. In direct comparison, MRI was non-inferior to CT in detecting metastatic disease. In addition, technical studies aiming to reduce the MRI acquisition time have been conducted.
The summary is written by the PhD student.
The defence is public and takes place in auditorium C114-101, Aarhus University Hospital, Palle Juul-Jensens Boulevard 99, 8200 Aarhus N and online via Zoom. Please read the attached press release for more information.
