Many psychiatric disorders originate from shared genes

The largest study of its kind so far shows that the eight most common psychiatric disorders have a common genetic structure. Researchers from iPSYCH and the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium are behind the new results, which could help to develop more precise diagnoses and improved treatment.

Health's dean Lars Bo Nielsen wishes all employees a happy holiday season while giving a little preview on one of the faculty's strategic focus areas of 2020.

The Dean: We have to broaden our international horizon

The key endeavour for Health in 2020 will be internationalisation. Researchers, educators and students alike will have the opportunity to meet the world outside of Aarhus University and exchange knowledge and practice, says Dean Lars Bo Nielsen in his holiday greeting.

More influence for the departments with new scholarship model

The faculty’s new PhD scholarship model, which comes into force at the turn of the year, will not only give the departments increased basic funds but also greater responsibility for ensuring the appointment and (co-)financing of PhD programmes that demonstrate targeted support for departmental research and recruitment strategies.

Laboratory animals must be treated in the best way possible. This benefits both the animals and the quality of the research and the 3R Prize supports junior researchers who make an effort to do this. Photo: Jesper Rais.

New award recognises research that improves animal welfare

Laboratory animals are not necessarily needed to carry out high quality research. And if animals are used, this should be done in a proper and ethically responsible manner. This is the essence of a new award – the 3R Prize – which Health has established. It will be presented for the first time at the PhD Day in January.

Søren Paludan from the Department of Biomedicine has twice had a postdoc funded by the EU. Photo: Aarhus University.

"Getting a Marie Curie fellow takes a little effort, but it's worth it"

A talented, foreign postdoc for two years – free of charge. That is what the EU is offering. But very few researchers at Health utilise the scheme.
